sometimes good, good things can be discovered when traveling. this one was no further than the well-read US Airways magazine stuffed into the seat pouch in front of me. i just got back today and couldn’t wait to look-up this artist to see what the dealio was. turns out Sarah Cihat studied at the Parsons School of Design and conceived her product design idea as part of her thesis project. she’s also a very well-kudo’d designer, having been mentioned in big glossies since 2003 (and design*sponge march 2006) – where the heck have i been that I haven’t see these before?
in an effort to emphasize sustainability and recycling, her designs start with cast-off ceramics found in second-hand stores or the salvation army. she then reglazes each piece, using a technique similar to silkscreening. all pieces are refired as well. i love how the original plate design peeks through. her silhouette motifs include botanicals, animals, insects, skulls and pin-up girls. be sure to check out her dirt porcelain, too. wow.
