Thrifted Thoughts: Gamer-friendly Sofa

Do you have a man in your life that’s anything like mine, a gamer?

If you do, you know that finding the optimal seating for video gaming is tricky.

Everything seems to be too high, too low, too upright, or too reclined. Your seating has to be the right height to thump it out on the drums while playing Rockband, but also a place where you can sit back and get comfy for hours of Call Of Duty.

Not being a gamer myself, I don’t really get the appeal, but I know one thing for sure: When I saw this 3-piece chair/sofa combo, I knew it would fit the bill perfectly.

At $50 a piece, each of these separate chairs can be used on their own or lined up to form a sofa. They are the perfect place to sink into, but also provide a high seat edge for perching on to rock the drums.

The way I see it, you have 3 options here.

  1. DIY Slipcover
  2. Professional reupholstery
  3. Leave them as-is and layer multiple throw blankets over top to create a more casual look.

I personally dig the big, fat, brown corduroy fabric that presently covers them. It’s soft, cozy and perfect for a rec room. Introducing a throw blanket like this with warm, caramels, soft blues & greys along with crisp creams would let the retro vibe flow while, at the same time, modernizing the look to avoid creating a time warp.

So, what do you think?

Would this solution please both you and the gamer in your life? Tell me in the comments!

  1. That throw works perfectly with the couch. Got the same issue with a sofa bed my husband brought home. I opted for pillows, but you can’t exactly snuggle under them.

  2. You know, this really hits home. My husband move into my apartment with all my furnishings. One of my prized possessions is a vintage mid-century green sofa, that’s rather Scandinavian.

My husband, who isn’t a gamer but has never met a PS2, Wii or XBOX that he didn’t like, commented ‘There’s nowhere comfortable to sit in this house!” I hope to find a cool vintage sofa one day that will meet his comfort and my style requirements. The search continues!

  3. oh this couch looks great! i always like leaving things as is if i can. there are a few things that i got lately that i’ve spray painted hammered silver. although cool before they are so much better now and it all flows.

  4. Gah, that throw is full of awesomeness.

Actually, I like the couches, too, and we are both gamers in our family. Living in a small space, however, we went practical with our couch and bought a futon. We did a lot of, uh, er, research around town and on the internet before choosing ours, and it’s really the most comfortable couch-that-turns-into-a-bed-thingy that we’ve ever owned. I can cover it with any full-sized sheet like a slipcover, too!

It’s got a nice, somewhat shallow seat to it, even though it’s a full-sized bed. The mattress is a spring mattress instead of the standard fill futon, so there’s a lot more umph to it, if you know what I mean. Decent support for when we’re both stuck on the couch grumbling our way through some difficult level.
