The Umbrella

Have you ever had something on a trip go awry, only to learn that the experience made your visit that much more special?

Many years ago, my mum and I were staying at our favorite bed and breakfast in East Sussex, England. We were planning a visit just a few miles away to Pevensey Castle. That morning we had watched the weather with our host, Mrs. Pratt and were gambling on getting the visit to the castle in before a rain storm as we hopped a taxi to the castle.

After touring for only a few minutes, the wind picked up, the clouds rolled in and we experienced a full fledged storm. We were prepared, of course, and carried umbrellas. Except that with the huge gusts of wind, our umbrellas weren’t exactly cooperating.

Here is the series of photos I couldn’t resist capturing that day:

The Umbrella

The Umbrella

The UmbrellaSee the fence behind my mother? There was a group of about 20 school boys just outside of the frame laughing at the sight of her struggling with the umbrella — and her laughing in spite of herself.

Amid the jolly laughter, we looked around trying to figure out what to do, since there was minimal shelter in the ruins of the castle. And then, as if on cue, Mrs. Pratt’s blue Mini Cooper hailed from around the corner and whisked us back to the house to warm up with a cup of tea.

My mother and I still talk about that day. Although I felt badly about not helping her with her “brolly”, I am glad that we have these images to treasure.

Have you ever experienced a positive outcome when your travel plans didn’t go as expected?
