Have you ever caught a glimpse of home while traveling? Although Amsterdam has many bicycles, as I discussed in a previous article, this bicycle parked outside the Rijksmuseum caught my eye. From afar, it is colorful, fun and it just makes you smile. A closer look showcases the Alaskan license plate on the back, with the motto, The Last Frontier. This welcome sight may have seemed that much sweeter, since I had been away from home for almost a month. Ironically, since I live on the East Coast of the United States, I live almost as many miles away from Alaska as the distance to Amsterdam. Still, it lifted my spirit to see something so spectacular “from home”.
Want to visit the Rijksmuseum for yourself? The Rijksmuseum boasts an amazing collection of Dutch masterpieces from The Dutch Golden Age, by Rembrandt, Vermeer, Jan Steen, Frans Hals, et al. Other collections of Dutch history range from the years 1200 to 2000, with more than a million objects. Although I visited for several days, I longed for more time there. One day I will return.
