On Summer Slumber and Ambition

“Sleeping Summer Sunset” by Kayla Skogh – click for info

I had a completely different post ready for you today, but during these past few weeks the onslaught of summer has led me to a delightful dilly of a pickle. To quote a friend, summer’s simply got “a hold on me.”

It’s sunny and hot; farmers’ markets are overflowing with fresh produce, enticing me to indulge my inner foodie; I’m less than a five-minute walk from a beach, a gelato shop, and four coffee shop patios.

If that wasn’t enough, I just spent a blissful week by a lake in the woods where the soundtrack was predominantly nature-made, and the most pressing question was which bag of potato chips I’d open next.

How on earth is a girl to engage into full work mode under such circumstances?

Very gently, I say.

Here’s the dilemma: Sultry summer is here (in the northern hemisphere), bringing with it a desire to kick back and relax, but for many of us–some by choice and others not, work goals remain.

How does one reconcile the slumber-filled nature of summer with the ambitious tone of work and deadlines?

After turning it around in my head for the past week, I came up with a few ideas that may help:

Re-evaluate your priorities. What really needs to get done? Why? Focus on your short list; the rest is gravy.

If you can, reduce or manage work expectations, especially the week after summer vacation.

Plan your work on a calendar. By knowing when you need to get things done to meet your summer goals, you’ll know exactly how much catching up you’ll have to do when you ditch the office for an impromptu day at the water park.

Take it outside. There’s no reason you can’t enjoy a cool drink and soak up the sun while getting things done.

Know when it’s time to push and buckle down. Commit to spending a specific amount of time working, and honor it. When you’re done, reward yourself with something completely summer-licious like a bowl of berries, [insert refreshment of choice here] on a patio, or an afternoon at the beach.

Know when it’s time to ease up. Summer is short and so is life. Sometimes plans are meant to be chucked aside for good old-fashioned fun in the sun. No calculations, no justifications necessary.

How do you approach work during the summer?

Do you shift your habits at all? If so, what do you do differently?

what to wear to: beat the heat

This is a guest post from Erika Riggs of Rouge and Whimsy.

When the temperature starts inching toward triple digits, or even surpassing it, the challenge of putting together an outfit that looks good and keeps you cool gets harder and harder.

While it’s tempting to lounge around in a swimsuit by the pool (or even in it), daily life calls for a little bit more clothing.

It may seem counter-intuitive, but wearing light, flowing clothing rather than a pair of teeny shorts will keep you more comfortable in the heat. Designed to be worn loose, a maxi dress or a pair of on-trend palazzo pants will keep you cooler and stylish, despite that weather report.

Maxi dresses can be found at nearly any big-box store or even local boutiques in a smattering of colors and shapes. I love this one for Target because it’s loose-fitting on top and bottom and in a slimming solid color. Maxi dresses are appropriate for work, weekend wear and even – with the right accessories – a garden wedding.

Worried about looking like you’re wearing a mumu? Find one that cinches in at your natural waist, which is often the narrowest part of a woman’s body. This will give you an hour-glass shape, something that mumus don’t ever achieve.

Accessorize with fun jewelry, a great pair of shades, and comfortable sandals.

Maxi dress: Target / necklace: OddsAndEndsbyKaley / sunglasses: modcloth / sandals: Nordstrom

If you’re not a dress fan, try a pair of light-weight wide-leg pants. Like a maxi dress, these pants won’t cling and will keep the dreaded sticky leg syndrome from happening. You can pick up a pair of solid, linen-blend pants, or if you’re bold, try a pair of printed palazzo pants. The slight high-waist and small print is slimming, and when worn with wedges, your legs will appear longer. Tuck in a loose solid tank and add some bangles to your arms to complete the look.

Pants: Hive and Honey / Tank: Old Navy / Shoes: TOMS / Bangles: Shop Ruche and Anthropologie / Hat: Banana Republic

Another tip? Choose natural fabrics. Cotton, linen, and even silk are much better bets than plastic-based polyesters, which often don’t breathe.

What do you wear to beat the heat?

Lazy Summer Magic

"guitar girl" by Jane Heller - click for info

Ahh. The dog days of summer have arrived.

Here in Wisconsin, like much of the US, we are experiencing record-setting high temperatures and have just come from a June with the lowest recorded rainfall since 1895. When I started thinking about July’s post, I realized I wanted to bring my other great love to the Scoutie Girl community: music.

I have the lucky honor of co-hosting a weekly radio show on my community-run station, and thought it would be a blast to put together a short playlist for all of you out there. And don’t worry: if you’re in the southern hemisphere, in the throes of winter, this should help lift your spirits. Got Spotify? You can listen to the complete playlist here!

Lazy Summer Magic: Tunes for Hot Days & Cool Nights

Jungle Drum – Emiliana Torrini: Me and Armini
The driving beat of this song, combined with sing-along vocals, makes this perfect for a road trip or a day at the beach. Be warned: it will be in your head (and have you smiling) for days.

There And Back Again – Toshi Reagon: There And Back Again
A little mellow, but ever the magic from Toshi Reagon. A song about persevering, important to remember when we’re stuck inside working when it seems everyone else gets to play outside!

Take It Off – Ke$ha: Animal
I must admit: I’m not a huge Ke$ha fan. But this song is perfect for the Friday nights of summer, when it’s time to let all the cares go and just have fun.

I Love Rock N’ Roll – Joan Jett & The Blackhearts: Greatest Hits [Disc 1]
Who doesn’t love rock n’ roll when it is sung by Joan Jett? Windows down, cruising the open road… You know what I mean.

The Cult of Dionysus – The Orion Experience: Cosmicandy
A friend introduced me to The Orion Experience, and their electric-pop sound has kept me going through summer, winter, and many late nights of writing. Let their excitement infect you.

All The Lovers – Kylie Minogue: Aphrodite
Pure dance music fun. Kylie Minogue (of 1980s pop fame) is now the queen of the dance club scene, and this just proves she can still bust a move. And probably get you to bust one, too.

Awake My Soul – Mumford & Sons: Sigh No More
I credit my friend Tor for introducing me to Mumford & Sons. Even though the group was already very famous, it was this song that made me listen twice to their lyrics and instrumentation. I can’t imagine making a playlist without this song.

Sing it Loud – k.d. lang & The Siss Boom Bang: Sing it Loud
This song is my anthem to being strong and proud in your own skin. When I heard k. d. lang perform it live this past May, I wrapped my heart up in it and haven’t let it go. Sing it LOUD.

I Feel The Earth Move – Carole King: The Essential Carole King [Disc 1]
Yes. Need I say more?

Sing Along (Feat. Dave Matthews) – Blue Man Group: The Complex
Blue Man Group has always fascinated me, with their wild live shows and their face paint. But this song is about more than just crazy, zany antics; it’s about coming together and sharing music. Something made for summer nights.

Matches To Paper Dolls – Dessa: A Badly Broken Code
I wouldn’t have, on first listen, called Dessa a “hip-hop” artist – but I’m learning that the genre comes in many forms. This song blows my mind and wrenches my heart every time I listen. A true writer’s musician, she continues to amaze.

Get Your Bike – God-Des & She: Three
Hailing from Wisconsin, this duo brings hard-hitting lyrics and real issues to their audiences. But sometimes, even bad-ass singers want to have fun. That’s what this song is all about: having fun.

I Was Made for Sunny Days – The Weepies: Be My Thrill
Often thought of as “kids’ musicians,” The Weepies have a broad message, and their music is great for enjoying a good book, background sound at a barbeque, or in the car while running errands. It will make you laugh, smile, and cry. This song might do all three.

I Just Found Out About Love – Sally De Broux: The Way Love Can Be
A brilliant jazz vocalist Sally de Broux takes jazz standards and re-invents them for the atypical jazz listener. Perfect for a dinner party or a backyard fire, jazz has never sounded so good.

Escape Artist – Zoe Keating: Into the Trees
Listen to this song while flying high in a tire swing. Or going down a really tall slide. This is both adventure and excitement, with the thrill of all possibility.

Beauty in the World – Macy Gray: Beauty in the World
Try to not dance to this Macy Gray song. I dare you. Just try…

Big Yellow Taxi – Joni Mitchell: Dreamland
Joni Mitchell is perhaps my favorite singer and songwriter. This one, about saving the environment and enjoying the beauty, is a great reminder for all the joy we can share in summer.

Share The Moon – Indigo Girls: Beauty Queen Sister
From their latest release, this is the song that will forever remind me of the best first date: gazing up at a clear night sky, flooded with stars, in the middle of farmland in south-central Wisconsin. Listen to this with the one you love and share all the memories that keep you together.

A Nervous Tic Motion of the Head to the Left – Andrew Bird: The Mysterious Production of Eggs
Andrew Bird does with stringed instruments what I can only dream to do as a writer. If you’ve never heard his music, check him out. And sit back in awe.

Dog Days Are Over – Florence + The Machine: Lungs
No one wants to think about the end of summer, but it eventually does arrive. Let Florence + the Machine remind you of all the great memories you made this year with this driving beat and chorus just begging to be sung out loud.

Happy summer listening!

until next time,

art to inspire: 9 Inspiring Quotes to get you Through the Summer

The sun is shining and the flowers have bloomed – it is finally summer, the season of rest, relaxation, and sitting by the pool. For me, summer is not just about sunburns and tiny umbrellas, though; it is also the season of reflection and regrouping.

Now, I know that the end of the year is the time typically reserved for these types of things, but the middle of the year is just as good.

Why? Depending on what industry you are in, summers are typically slower than the other seasons, with customers on vacation and kids out of school – leaving you with more time to plan for the next six months and evaluate your progress thus far.

Make sense?

Good.

So while you’re resting, reflecting, and regrouping this summer, here are 9 inspirations to get you through the slow(er) season…

(above) 1. Let the Flower Bloom

2. Let the Sun Shine

3. Find a Path

4. Do Not Forget to be Awesome

5. Live with Passion

6. Ma’am Step Away from the Computer

7. One Step

8. Adventure

9. Don’t Give Up

acute how-to: summer cocktails

I am a big fruity cocktail fan – especially in the summer. There’s nothing better than lounging in the sun with a tasty drink in hand. The one thing that often turns me off fruity drinks, though, is the excessive syrupy sweetness.

To cure this little issue, I created three simple and naturally sweetened fruity drinks. Each of these drinks clocks in at just about 150 calories and would be the perfect accompaniment for a warm summer evening.

Pineapple-Mango Frozen Margarita

{makes four drinks}

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup of frozen, chopped pineapple
  • 1 cup of frozen, chopped mango
  • 6 ounces of pineapple juice {no sugar added}
  • 4 shots of tequila
  • 2 cups of lime flavored {unsweetened} sparkling water
  • lime slices and/or maraschino cherries as a garnish

Put pineapple, mango, tequila, and pineapple juice in a blender. Add a splash of tap water if this is too thick for your blender. If you cannot find frozen mango or pineapple, use fresh and add a handful of ice to the blender.

Once mixture is completely blended, add sparkling water and stir. Serve each drink with a garnish of lime slices or maraschino cherries.

Whipped Pear Cocktail

{makes one drink}

Ingredients:

  • a flew pear “ice cubes” {aka – frozen pear pieces}
  • a shot of whipped cream flavored vodka
  • 4 ounces of pear juice {no sugar added}
  • 4 ounces of sparkling water
  • ground cinnamon

In order to make the pear ice cubes, just freeze peeled slices of pears on a plate lined with waxed paper. I used canned pears {the kind packed in juice, not syrup} but fresh would work, too.

Fill the bottom of your glass with a few frozen pear slices.  Pour in the whipped cream vodka, pear juice, and sparkling water. Garnish with a sprinkling of cinnamon. This drink tastes like a dessert -it is so rich, yet refreshing, and so, so delicious!

Sparkling Mixed Berry Wine

{makes one drink}

Ingredients:

  • 4 ounces of white wine {whatever you have on hand – I used pinot grigio}
  • 4 ounces of berry flavored sparkling water {unsweetened}
  • a few tablespoons of frozen, mixed berries

Fill the bottom of your glass with the frozen mixed berries and pour in the wine and sparkling water. This is such a refreshing, simple, and very low calorie option.

Cheers!
