planning: breaking down the big picture

Moving right along from estimation into planning…

My approach to planning is basically taking all of my estimated scope and plotting it out against time, directly into my calendar.

There are 3 basic types of planning: high level planning, mid level planning, and low level planning.

High level planning spans a longer time frame, for me that means about a year. A high level plan may simply be a list of milestones or goals plotted over twelve months.

Mid Level Planning spans shorter time frames, anywhere from 1-3 months, and is where you list and outline more detailed scope, like specific projects.

Low Level Planning is planning at the weekly level. This is where you put down the granular activities that you need to accomplish each day to move forward on your goals.

We’ll get into details on each of these in upcoming posts.
