Getting to Know You is your introduction to our new Scoutie Girl contributors. Today, enjoy getting to know more about Gwyn Michael!
Why do you DIY?
The most obvious answer for me is why not? As the child of artists and teachers I was
taught to be creative from the start, and what started as standard artistic skills has
spread to other areas of my life. I have a tendency to view everything from the can I do
it myself point of view. This has allowed me to own and experience a lot of things I might
not have otherwise, and save a lot of money in the process. I just love to try new things
and don’t enjoy having idle hands. I have taught myself to bake artisanal bread, to knit,
to bind my own books and most importantly to be proficient in Photoshop which is what
my current work is built on.
What are you MOST passionate about right now?
Art. Ideas. Activism.
Art in many forms is my means of expression. I am currently very aware and thus
passionate about our impact on the living planet. If we destroy our home nothing else
bad, or good will matter. My art is always a manifestation of this awareness.
Ideas, on all sides of an issue or topic to keep me aware and thinking of new ways to
be in the world. I love to absorb information and am always passionate about learning.
Despite my tree hugger tendencies I am a big time book junkie.
Activism, not as in protests and sit-ins, but as being always active in sharing my passion
for living as responsibly as possible in a destructive culture, and with respect for the
planet. I love trees!
What do you have in common with Scoutie Girl readers?
Well first of all I am one! I have been a faithful reader since I discovered Scoutie Girl
last summer. Beyond that I love what I do and am determined to build a thriving and
responsible business while encouraging others to do the same. I love sharing ideas,
thinking outside the box, and seeing people succeed in unconventional ways.
What would Scoutie Girl readers be surprised to know about you?
I am 52 years old and reinventing my life. My education and background are in
illustration and art education, but I have been most happy till now working as a farm
hand which I did until 2010. I am a country girl at heart with a city girl’s curiosity, and I
have done a fair amount of trespassing in the name of art.
