If you love holiday smells and a home filled with welcoming fragrance throughout the holiday, you will love this DIY potpourri. It’s so easy and once you make your own special potpourri in a crockpot or slow cooker, you can just heat it, leave it, and enjoy it! It’s a great way to set the stage for a holiday party, or just for an afternoon of relaxation by the fire with a good book.
Simple Holiday Potpourri
4-5 cups water
2 large oranges, cut into fourths (skin on)
1 large apple cut into 4 pieces
5 fresh cinnamon sticks
1 tablespoon fresh ginger
1-2 teaspoons whole cloves
2-3 drops peppermint (optional)
Combine all ingredients together in crock pot or slow cooker. Turn on high for about 20 minutes. Then reduce to simmer or lowest setting with the top off for fragrance to meander throughout your home. (You can also prepare this in a medium saucepan and keep on simmer on the stove top but be sure not to let the water cook out).
Editor’s Note: I made this potpourri fully expecting it to give my home the fragrance of mulled spices – the well-known scent of the holiday season. This is oh-so-much better than that! The fresh scent of orange is amazing. This may or may not be the “signature scent” of our home now…
