Why You Shouldn’t Marry the Man of Your Dreams

image by mudcard  - click for more info

The scene: my wedding reception.

Toasts have just been completed by my dad, the maid of honor, the best man, and freshly minted husband. I unexpectedly grab the mic.

“Zach was scheduled to give the final toast tonight, but his days of having the last word are over.”

The crowd goes wild. The laughter dies down. People shift in their seats and drink from their Mason jars.

“After we got engaged, Zach playfully asked me if he was the man of my dreams. I thought for a second and said, ‘Nope. I never could have thought you up.’ Zach, you are unlike anyone I’ve ever met, and unlike anyone I could have predicted for myself. So, no, you are not the man of my dreams. But you are the man that I love.”

Why am I sharing this story, and why did the table of bridesmaids produce enough tears to fill a punch bowl?

Because there is extraordinary power in being open to the unexpected.

It requires vulnerability. It means experiencing rather than controlling.

Can you stay open to the unexpected?

Because sometimes your imagination just can’t do justice to what’s in store for you.

In the comments, I’d love to hear if you’ve been pleasantly surprised by something you couldn’t predict.

The Power of Fountain Pens: Objects That Make Us Feel Good

print by Andrew Parfenov – click image for more info

I came back from the holidays feeling refreshed and renewed. Of course the change of scenery and time away from work were big contributors, but there was also something else…

The new stuff.

As much as we like to hoot and holler about Christmas not being about the material things we give and get, it’s hard to deny how good it can feel to bring new and thoughtful things into our lives.

The perfect pair of shoes. A just right necklace. Art that makes the wall sing. They don’t have to be everything to us, but they can bring comfort and a smile.

I was curious about how these simple novelties make us feel good. I asked ladies on social media what their favorite simple luxuries were. The response was swift and enthusiastic.

A great fountain pen. Really good chocolate. Luxe paper products. Scented soy candles. Organic herbal tea. A considerately curated playlist.

Why did they like these things? Because of how they felt when they received them.

They felt cared for, cherished, important, and worthy. Not bad for a fountain pen.

As we get further from the excitement of the New Year and back into routine, remember that you can change your day, even if just a little, by gifting yourself (or someone else) a small and thoughtful thing.

New spin on an old favorite; New Day’s resolution

Happy New Year!

This is the time we think about the year to come and imagine all that it could be. In fact, this time last year I invited you to set an intention for the year. I love this practice, will be doing it myself, and invite you to do so as well.

But I also want to suggest another spin on the New Year’s resolution tradition, especially if you have a history of not upholding them or losing enthusiasm for a commitment that long.

Why not set a resolution for a single day?

Adopt the ole “one day at a time” approach, and let that intention guide your day. Much like setting an intention for a yoga class, a short-term day-long resolution can be focused and specific to your needs of the day.

With a New Day resolution, you have the opportunity to frame each and every day as you please.

And your resolution doesn’t have to make sense to anyone but you. Some daily intentions I’ve set have been play, enjoy, rest, push, soak, and edge.

And like a New Year resolution, you may break a New Day resolution. But you don’t have to perfectly excute your resolution in order for it to have a positive affect. It’s just a touchstone to help guide you, and no one is handing out grades.

What is your New Day resolution for today, this new day? Share with me in the comments.

5 books worth giving

image by daysfalllikeleaves – click for more info

‘Tis the season for giving, and what better gift than a book? I prefer the old-fashioned kind that kills trees, but whether your recipients do digital or paper, here are my top read recommendations for this holiday season.

The Age of Miracles

for the fiction lover

One of the most captivating books I’ve encountered in a long time. This coming of age story is set into motion by a simple but provocative question: what would happen if the Earth’s rotation slowed? Answered through the eyes of young girl, this was my favorite read of the year.

The Female Brain

for the science junkie, expectant parent, or human behavior enthusiast

Why do teenage girls talk on the phone so much? Why do baby girls look at faces more than baby boys? This book is a fascinating study of the female brain from in-utero through maturity. Also check out the companion book, The Male Brain.

Fascinate: Your 7 Triggers to Persuasion and Captivation

for entrepreneurial types

In a word? Fascinating! Sally Hogshead will change the way you see the world, and yourself, with this book. She outlines 7 fascination triggers and how they work in the world, from advertising to social behavior. And yup, she’ll even tell you how you fascinate.

The Four Agreements: A Practical Guide to Personal Freedom

required reading for all humans

Taken to heart, this book is a game changer. I love this one because the message is powerful and the suggestions effective, but it doesn’t read like a hippy-dippy self-help book. Very grounded.

Guardians of Being

for the animal lover

One of my all time favorite books to read and gift. A collaboration between Eckhart Tolle (The Power of Now guy) and Patrick McDonnell’s (the MUTTS comics guy), this book is a gentle nudge towards being and presence. Who better to help with that than your favorite animal?

Deck the Blog: Favorite Design Resources

Something about the holidays makes me want to spruce up my website and blog. Is it homes decorated especially for the season? Beautiful wrapping paper and tags? Whatever it is, pretty is in the air.

If you’ve got the fever, too, you can explore some of my favorite design resources for blogs.

Fount

Just drag the Fount button into your bookmarks bar, and then hover over any font online that you happen to be crushing on. Fount will tell the you name of the font. It’s font-stalking made easy!

The Ink Nest

Want to add a handmade touch to your design? The Ink Nest has wonderful hand drawn vectors and clip art in a variety of themes. The collections are really affordable, and there’s enough variety in the selection that you don’t have to worry about your website “wearing the same dress” as a lot of other sites.

The Shop at August Empress

Designer Jo Klima offers beautiful original patterns and buttons at her blog, August Empress. I love her stuff because it’s soft and feminine without being frilly.

COULORlovers

Need some color inspiration? COLOURlovers is your place. It’s a serious treasure trove — think Library of Congress big — of color combos and patterns. It’s easy to fall down the rabbit hole, but a great resource all the same.

Do you have a favorite design resource? Please share it in the comments!
