Acute How-To: Simple Pillow Covers

Technically, spring started last Sunday, March 20th.  Although it might not feel very spring-like where you live, it is nice to know that warmer weather is on its way.

Every spring, I like to revive myself.  This reviving includes my wardrobe and my house {hello spring cleaning!}.  A great way to revive your home beyond cleaning is to add fresh décor elements.  An inexpensive element that makes a big difference is a set of new throw pillows.  While you can find many inexpensive pillow options at big box retailers, I am going to embrace the DIY spirit of Scoutie Girl and teach you how to make your own.

If you own a sewing machine, this project will be a breeze.  If you don’t own a sewing machine, it is still totally doable but will just take a bit more time.

Step One:

Take any existing tired looking throw pillows and remove the covers. {If the covers are not removable – don’t worry}.

Step Two:

Lie your pillow out on your chosen fabric and cut a square about two inches larger on each side.  Cut a second piece of fabric that is six inches longer than the first.  {If you are using a standard square throw pillow, you will need two feet of fabric.}

Step Three:

Take the larger piece of fabric and cut it in half.

Step Four:

Pin down the edges of the cut sides to make a seam.  Sew these two seams.

Step Five:

Lay the uncut, smaller piece of fabric down {pattern side up} and lay the two cute pieces on top of it {pattern side down}.  The two cut pieces will overlap. Pin around the four sides and sew each side.

Step Six:

Flip the pillow cover right side out and stuff your pillow inside.

Voila! A brand new piece of décor to brighten up your couch or bed.

Have fun, experiment with colors and textures. Sometimes an unlikely combination ends up looking so perfect.
