I just discovered the work of Kelly Reemtsen thanks to an amazing art blog called The Jealous Curator. And once I started doing a little research, I found that Kelly’s work has also been mentioned over on Apartment Therapy and SFBayGirl. How did I miss it?
The brushstrokes in Kelly’s paintings are so rich and thick. But the subject is was really intrigued me. The juxtaposition of a woman in a glamorous, party dress holding a less-than-glamorous object (whether it be a garden hose, a wrench, or even a chainsaw) suggests so much. Whether it is meant as an empowerment to women or perhaps eludes more to the idea of a modern-day housewife remains to be seen, at least in my view. But one thing is for sure….these paintings are absolutely stunning.

Fabulous! I agree with you on the nice use of juxtaposition. Personally, I don’t do yard work but I can wield a mean hammer – maybe I should throw on a party dress next time to feel more ladylike!

It’s interesting how the heads of your figures are cropped off and the
emphasis is on the body as doing physical work and chores, all while
remaining “pretty” . Your brushstrokes are bold and colorful.
