showy blossoms

Cathynichols_paintings
the word 'winsome' came to mind as soon as i saw these lovelies. so refreshingly pretty and simple, these floral paintings are part of a new series by this talented artist. the vivid hues evoke happiness, while the casual stillness of each one is very calming. perfect alone or in a grouping - there are 4 others in this series. each print is 7" x 7" and printed on 8.5" x 11" velvet, fine art paper; signed and titled beneath the image in pencil with a white border for easy framing. found via creative thursday. Artist: Cathy Nichols

pressing the letter to the metal

Zeichenpress_cards
you know a card is on-the-spot when you immediately conjure "the perfect recipient" of the message in your head - good and bad alike! i did that through the entire collection of these retro-styled and lampoonish cards. these 2 sister-in-law designers teamed up when one purchased an antique letterpress and had some big ideas. their cards are printed on recycled paper and come with a coordinating envelope. they also design custom cards, posters, coasters, cd covers and any manner of collateral biz materials. [zeichen means 'character' - love the dual meaning here] Designers: Fran Shea and Jen Shea

smokin' shoulder bags

Snapdesign_shoulderbags
it all comes together in these roomy, made-to-order shoulder bags. if you sew, you will notice (and be impressed by) the decorative topstitching straight away. if you don't sew, please know that this is a big deal - one mis-stitch and the whole thing is scrap. (try it if you don't believe me!) the clean lines and colorful vinyls lend themselves well to this kind of snazzy styling, too. practical, waterproof and durable, they're made one atta time by the designer. she also offers totes, laptop bags, pod wallets, and distinctly original record books (made from old LPs). silkscreened & sewn sweetness

Kaybu_accessories
coasters, handbags, t-shirts, belts, pillows, onesies, headbands - these are just some of the items that emerge from this artist's silkscreened designs. her graphics are fresh and simple, and her spectacular sewing skills bring each item into being (not sure about the tees). she strives to create everyday, functional items that are comfortable and beautiful. i think she's hit her mark b/c there's not an item here I wouldn't use - very appealing style! found via poppytalk Indie Designer: Meghan Burch

lovebugs lost and found

Bunnywithatoolbelt_lovebugs
a sweet note from this supremely talented artist led me to her lovebugs. these little guys and gals were created from found objects and repurposed construction leftovers - can you see some 'things' in there? an educated and accomplished artist, she created 1500 (yes, 1500) of these lovebugs for an installation at the Fuller Craft Museum, which is pictured in the bottom-left corner here. i can see a few of these hung for a smaller, unique collection of funky wall art. please, please, please visit her website to see all that she has going on! strong style and imaginative items - wait til you see her latest collection of handcarved necklaces. love all of it! customizing available. what goes around comes around

Loop_notecards
spotted these amazing notecards on the orange beautiful blog, the Scoop. each design is meticulously hand-drawn by the artist, who worked as an architect before she launched her stationery collection. i am in complete awe of the detail - tiny line after tiny line! her designs give a heavy nod to Mother Nature through her subject matter as well as her choice of raw materials: all of her paper projects are Forest Stewardship Council Certified (responsible forestry) and use as much post-consumer recycled content as possible. sets come in sets of 5, 8 and 10, with a choice of natural white or kraft stock. the bottom 2 images are from a collaborative collection of doodles {doodlespark} mailed back and forth over many years from mother to daughter, each one progressively adding to the design. how cool is that! truly, she has a great reverence for the circles and cycles of life - the loop. wear your heart on your totebag

Whimsypress_totebags
rec'd a nice note from donna at whimsy press about their latest creation: eco-friendly totes. they're made entirely from recycled content (80% recycled cotton and 20% old soda bottles) and embellished with a fashion-friendly message about being green. like all whimsy designs, they're sleek, fresh and happy. if you're in the market for a reusable marketbag or a roomy beachbag *and* you're passionate about our dear Mother Earth - these are worthy of a look-see. make a statement without saying a word. yeah baby. Celebrate Earth Day everday - reduce, reuse, recycle.

book review: "green chic - saving the earth in style"

special Earth Day post follows. thanks for reading!
Greenchic_book
if you were given the opportunity to gather a roomful of people (loved ones, influentials, strangers, anyone) and speak in a preachy way about ONE thing you wanted them to know, what would your one thing be? without a shadow of a doubt, mine would be eco-friendly living. my closest friends and family could have answered that on my behalf - they've been referring to me as the hippie-treehugger-crunchy-granola-girl for more than 15 years (in only the kindest ways). yes, i go to what would seem to others as 'out of my way' to recycle or be green in just about every facet of my life - i've become indoctrinated and habituated so i don't feel like i'm doing anything above and beyond the call of duty. it's just life. i was struck by an Indian proverb in 1993 that read: "We did not inherit the earth from our ancestors. We are borrowing from our grandchildren." i was 4 years from having a child at that point, but it hit me hard - and that was that.

needless to say (tho I will say it), i was thrilled when i rec'd an invitation to read and post my thoughts about this book: "green chic - saving the earth in style." truth is, you can't go around being preachy all the time - living by example can be pretty powerful though. and this book will give you plenty of info on how to go about making greener choices in your everyday life, thereby setting an excellent example for others to follow.

from the outset, the author - Christie Matheson - draws you in with her conversational style. i felt like i was reading a note from my BFF. she's not writing over-your-head, lofty ideas that you can't understand let alone try to implement. instead, she states the facts plain-n-simple on topics ranging from cleaners to clothing, plastics to parties and food to fashion. she gives definitions, statistics (startling), options and resources - loved every word of it! i dog-eared more than half the pages for future reference!

this is a thoughtful and fabulous jumping-off point for anyone who has a strong desire to make tiny or monumental changes in his/her everyday life, without surrendering personal taste or style (or making everything from scratch), especially if you're not even sure why you should change and you feel stupid asking. there's a mind-numbing amount of info out there on green-living - this book makes the notion accessible to those who might otherwise be overwhelmed (and give-up before trying).

*warning: you WILL experience a compulsive urge to read aloud the shocking statistics in this book to the nearest person to you - position yourself wisely.

polka-dotted pottery

Jdwolfe_pottery
looking through my "hearts me" page in my etsy shop is a recent favorite activity b/c i often find artists like this that i might not have otherwise (even tho she's quite accomplished). another fave is when i love the artist's work sooooo much that i can't decide which items to feature - such is the case here. she has been handcrafting multi-funtional pottery for over 10 years. her pieces are uniquely charming and energized, with a nod toward the unexpected. a gamut of spectacular items are on-hand as well as made-to-order, including bowls, vases, dinnerware, servers, mini-bowls, nesting bowls, cups, pitchers - all microwave/dishwasher safe. her husband is also an etsian, with his own line of original BBQ sauces, howling wolf. Appetitehome_pillows_2
simple with a touch of modern, the designs on these pillow covers are original hand-drawings created by the artist. she silkscreens each fabric and then expertly sews them into these pretty pillows. designs are typically printed on both sides of the cover (rare); fabrics vary from microsuede to cotton canvas. each pillow cover includes a hidden zipper on the side for removing and handwashing; pillow insert is included - approx. 15" x 15". designer also features teatowels, napkins and shower curtains with the same silkscreened flair.

a little bit vintage, a little bit rock-n-roll

Modish_miralujewelry
april 4th is a good day - for us and especially for Jena Coray from modish. two aprils ago, she started her blog; one april ago, she started her shoppe; this year, she launched her new jewelry collection, miralu. not too busy, is she? yowsa! she's not new to this racket, however, as she was originally an indie biz owner who made jewelry (curio j). glad she's back at it again! her designs are fresh and delightfully consistent with her overall style: vintage chic. these earrings are made from tiny fabric-covered posts with funky, rare vintage glass beads dangling below. great combos! Indie Designer: Jena Coray

nurtured nature

Boundearth_jewelry
these pieces knocked me out of my seat! "how the heck does she make these?" i wondered as i stared gape-mouthed and drooling on my desk (sorry for the imagery). this artist had her soul fused with Mother Nature at an early age, and it now fuels her striking and incredibly original jewelry designs. made from precious metals and pebbles, rocks, stones and quartz, each piece is snapshot of "improbable beauty." really remarkable. she's able to customize pieces for you, too, if you have a special rock or two (i've kept every rock my son has ever given to me...hmm). thanks to her devoted & proud *husband* for his note about his wife's work! got a Spring cold spell?

Tickledpink_knitwear
recently, i've rec'd a spate of the most kind & generous emails from fellow artists and designers with compliments for Scoutie Girl (thank you!) and introductions to their work. this designer would be one of them, and given today's chilly weather in southeastern PA - i definitely think her knitwear is appropriate to post. an accomplished fiber artist, she creates luxurious shawls, cowls, scarves, fingerless gloves, and lots more in various snuggly soft yarns. her use of pattern by color and texture is outstanding. she'll customize, too - many rich colors and yarns from which to choose. thanks for your note! tell her what she's won, Chuck

Abbycreek_paintings_2
remember the pay it forward giveaway from a few weeks ago? if not, one of my favorite painters held one on her blog, where i won the top painting "fiesta cup" - i was (and am) so happy with it! it arrived today, packaged so gently and sweetly, matted and ready to frame! i have another grouping of mug paintings that will welcome the "fiesta cup" with open arms, especially if she's the partying type!

i posted about Linda O'Neill's work a year ago, and she's become a good blog friend in the time since - i think she was one of the first to reach out and make a connection - so grateful for that! she is very, very well known for her pet paintings - they are beautiful. her work spans an impressive range of styles, with one consistent thread being the vibrant, bold palette that gives her paintings a lively, happy spirit. (she's also a dog person, and that gets her some points, too!) enjoy. thank you so much Linda!! Artist: Linda O'Neill

implosion pendants blow me away

Venerablebead_pendants
another commenter from today, and voila - here's her dazzling art! (see how fast that can happen sometimes!) these pendants are created from borosilicate glass and the flame of her torch - i love that fire is the critical element in manipulating them into their form. aren't they spectacular?! each pendant is 1" in diameter, and all are kiln-annealed for strength & durability once the creative process is complete. they are strung on gunmetal or sterling silver ball chains - lengths can be adjusted on request. she also features vintage skeleton key necklaces with glass ring charms and other semi-precious charms - delightfully unique. captured nature

Dsbrennan_photography
*love* when someone comments on this blog or on daisy janie, and it leads me to their striking works of art. such is the case with this photographer. she has a great eye for capturing intricate and delicate pieces of nature - sometimes in an abstract but very inspired way. her fascination with the character of her subject matter comes through in each image. great range and exploration. fine art prints on archival paper in many sizes, all signed and dated.
